The Backyard Drive-In

Last Friday night, we set up a screen and projector in the backyard, hit up RedBox for a movie, popped lots of popcorn, and had two of our best couple friends over for a backyard drive-in.

After the constant machinery at our house, our backyard has lost almost all of its grass, which is OK…it’s all been worth it. We just wanted to take full advantage of this rare time where our backyard is completely open & able to fill it up with cars.

I’m so glad we did. It was a blast. Quality free fun right here.

Even though Elijah & I aren’t getting married until May, we’re dying to start filling the house with some life before we move in! While we’re saving most of the fun of hosting for being a married couple at the house, we’re excited to go ahead and start establishing our house as a gathering place for friends. However, considering the house is still vacant and without much furniture, having people over isn’t the most convenient thing ever, so the drive-in was the perfect fit.

Of course we happened to plan it on the night that it was actually freezing. But hey, luckily our friends were up for the entire adventure of the night. (It didn’t help things that Elijah is too cheap to turn the heat on-I love that boy & all his craziness.)

Elijah has had these same two best friends since early high school. They were constantly working with each other, and if they weren’t working, they were fishing somewhere together. And if they weren’t fishing together, they were texting each other. Over the years, their girlfriends- one now fiance-& I have all become friends too!

With one of us having a house now, we really don’t care the condition of it, we’re just excited for this next phase of life & that we finally have a place to get together!

When they all started arriving, we hung out inside for a while.

I popped popcorn on our stove. Using the stove for the first time felt like a house milestone. Of course, what doesn’t these days?!

We gave Kristen her first house tour, Warren made himself at home by setting his pack of Dr. Pepper in the fridge, Luke gave me quality popcorn feedback, and Savannah warmed up her delicious hot chocolate on our stove.

Meanwhile, Elijah was offering ice to everyone from our brand new fridge, which had me dying. I snapped a pic as evidence of the genuine joy he received from our ice maker. I’m not kidding when I say he’s the happiest guy I know.

We all brought toppings for a popcorn bar: m&ms, peanuts, chocolate covered pretzels, candy corn, banana chips, and gummies. Savannah brought a pumpkin pie, plus her homemade hot chocolate, and Kristen brought her famous homemade cookie dough dip with chocolate-covered strawberries. Our little popcorn bar idea quickly turned into quite the spread. After talking too long in the kitchen, we finally braved the cold and headed out to bundle up for the movie, The Upside!

Since we are on a main road & currently without any backyard privacy, the looks we received from the passing cars were hilarious. I was thinking, “Yup, it’s just as it looks-we’re having a backyard drive in.”

And, we’ve already put a Friendsgiving on the calendar. Growing up is just the best. Especially when you do it with the same people by your side. I love this little house. I’m so glad that they do, too. It’s the little things that slowly make this house a home.
