Next Steps on the House + Found Friday Week 8

I love how HGTV has convinced us all that a full house renovation consists of about a week’s worth of work. Haha! Far from it. However, I’m beginning to truly learn that the joy is in the process.

Me & Elijah have always loved to work together. It all started when he built my Daisy Sue Design display for craft shows. I remember showing him a little sketch of my dream vendor display, and 3 days later standing in front of it, completely built. Needless to say, I was hands-down impressed & I think that’s when he proved to himself that he was capable of building hard things. To this day, we think back to those 3 days as some of our favorite days we ever spent together. Not to mention-though he still won’t admit it-he was totally sick. You would have never known by the way he was working. We had a craft show that we had to get it done by, so we literally worked almost 3, 12-hour days. It was a ball.

Our very first time to use our new set. We set up the morning after we finished it. We were WIPED ! (& thrilled!)

That’s when we began to realize that we loved working together. Fast forward to now, it’s crazy to think we are engaged & working on our future home.

It’s been a little under 3 months now & we’re already hooked on this renovation thing.

This morning I wanted to share some of our next steps for the house!

SIDING ARRIVED!

Obviously, we’ve been itching to paint this house since day ONE! However, while most of the siding is in surprisingly great shape, most of the bottom pieces need replacing. In the midst of Corona, Elijah ordered up some pieces of siding, but they were delayed by months. Due to their size, the siding wasn’t easy to come by, which left us waiting. We figured that we’d have lots of projects in the meantime. However, after 3 months, we learned that it still hadn’t arrived. Elijah did some further research and decided to go with a new type of board, fiber cement siding.

Shoutout to Elijah’s friend Warren (the owner of the awesome red truck who has consistently been appearing in more pictures around here) who went to load up the siding with him & deliver!

Once Elijah gets these pieces installed, it’s time to PAINT! After lots of thinking, we are going with Silos White! (With the exception of the back wall…see below for our latest idea that sparked.)

Sectional Shopping

Okay. I may sound naive, but I truly did not know the prices of furniture. Like, holy cow. Haha! While I’m shopping for most of our furniture on online auctions, I draw the line when it comes to buying upholstered furniture from strangers. There are few things that we want to “splurge” on, and a sectional is one of them! We have our little list of couch criteria. Since it will be the only couch we are buying for the whole house, we’ve taken extra time to find the “right one.” I’ll be sharing a full post later about couch shopping & what we end up choosing!

Bold Exterior Idea Sparked

On Wednesday morning, our bold exterior idea sparked. On Thursday afternoon, two paint samples went on the house. Sometimes you just wanna jump on an idea!

On @fernwayhome Instagram, we shared the idea + the two colors we narrowed it down to. We gathered your input & had the BEST time doing that. I’m planning on doing a full blog post on this idea soon & share the color we end up going with!

In case you haven’t seen, here’s the inspo that sparked the idea.

Our First Piece of Outdoor Furniture

Every month, I have “delivery days” for Daisy Sue Design,! These are the days I drive to Franklin, Arrington, and Nolensville to restock all of the stores I sell in. Yesterday, Elijah offered to go with me, since he is the sweetest. After going in precious shop after precious shop, I have to enforce my shopping discipline to not get distracted. Now more than ever.

However, yesterday, this old chair was sitting out front of Three French Hens & I just couldn’t resist it. It’s our first piece of outdoor furniture! Our $20 chair. I adored how short and wide it was. I love funky shaped furniture. I could already see it being our morning sitting spot in the backyard, on our pea gravel patio. I’ve already shown Elijah the outdoor cedar couch that I want him to build to sit next to it…he was totally in.

Time for Landscaping!

YAY! It’s finally time for landscaping. Since fall is prime time for planting, Elijah wanted to go ahead and get the fence up so we could get our landscaping in! This week I’ll be making a list of plants to look for & we’ll head to the nurseries in McMinnville to get them! It’s time for us to become privacy plant experts, ha. I’ve learned that building a house it like one giant research project. Always learning about the next thing. My camera roll is currently filled with privacy plant pics from walks & driving stalker pics.

Also, once the house is painted, I will transplant dozens of my mom’s Annabelle hydrangeas in the front & at the side of the house. Eeeeeek. I’ll share a post as soon as we get our first load of landscaping in!

Doorknob & Lantern Hunting

It’s fun to have something to search for. Once the house is painted, our new front door will go up, which means I need to find a door knob for it! I have something in mind, but haven’t found the right one yet.

I also want to go ahead & find a lantern, so that the porch can all be installed at the same time, in true HGTV fashion. Ideally, I’d find an old one at an auction. I have something in mind, but I’m pretty open.

Found Friday Week 8 Collection

Finally, as always, this week’s Found Friday collection is available in the Fernway Home Etsy shop! We lovingly refer to it as “Found items for an inspired home.”

In case you aren’t familiar with Found Fridays, every Friday we post a collection of found items to share with you. As we are on the hunt for pieces for our house at thrift shops, auctions, and yard sales, we always end up finding more treasures, so Found Fridays are our way of sharing those finds with you!

If you’re local to Murfreesboro, use coupon code LOCAL for porch pickup. If you’re not local, shipping is available. Hope you enjoy looking through!

We’ve loved sharing our journey with you! Thanks for reading!
