Months 2, 3 & 4

July, August, & September. Months 2, 3, & 4 of being the Montgomery’s.

I was on the phone with a lifelong friend the other day, and she immediately asked me the question, “HOW is married life?! Tell me everything!”

Let me tell you, the married life is truly all the good things I had imagined. After all the years of dating & having to say way too many “goodbyes,” our hearts have never been more at peace getting to go to bed together every night and waking up next to each other every morning. Somehow, those two pieces right there make every day feel more at peace.

While our first month of marriage flew by, these past few months have felt like our first months of “normal.”

Our jobs are in full swing. I’m completing a full-time internship, while Elijah is busy working on construction projects for his Fernway Home clients. We’re finally feeling some sense of rhythm, while keeping a healthy dose of newly-wed spontaneity and adventure. We took our first post-honeymoon trips, and pretty much have company over 2-3 times a week. We’re getting in the rhythms of laundry, dishes, tidying up, and all the things that come with keeping a home.

I know the ordinary hours of these days pass quickly, but ultimately, all the hours will add together to form this cherished season of life we will always look back on fondly…our “newly-wed season.” Therefore, I want to cherish each moment & not let myself forget that these are the days I’ve dreamed about for a long, long time.

So, here’s to not forgetting the quirks of months 2 & 3 & 4…

I don’t want to forget the dozens of lunch breaks we get to share together at home, and how you always want a chicken grilled cheese with strawberry jelly, Cheetos, and a glass of Kroger brand sweet tea. Bonus points if the grilled cheese is on sour dough.

Or the night you hopped in the shower & started squealing at how cold the water was, and had me dying laughing. The next morning, I hopped in my freezing shower, and the laughter was reversed. In the meantime of getting the hot water fixed, we got really good at cheering one another along… “You can do it!” “Submerge yourself! Submerge yourself!”

Or the night I pranked you & asked if I could clean out your ear…only to convince you that an entire Q-tip full of peanut butter was your earwax. You were hook line & sinker dude!

I don’t wanna forget the night you stayed up building a deck till 2AM, so I brought an eno to the job site and slept there until you finished.

Or the way I get to hear your heart when you pray for us every meal. By the way you lead me & you, I get to see a glimpse of the way you’ll lead our family one day.

I don’t want to forget how hard hard we laughed the time you had to crawl under our house at night to get power to our shop. You were under the house, and your dad was outside the house, fishing you a pole through the hole you cut in our siding. You kept asking where the pole was, and your dad was twisting and poking it all over. We were SO confused how you couldn’t see it. I ran inside, just to see a giant pole coming in and out of our office wall…

Or the first time we filled our house with over a dozen people for a meal,

or our new favorite walk from our house-our little piece of country right in the middle of the city,

or the day your shop was delivered & how I coincidentally ended up driving behind the “oversized load” all the way to our house.

I don’t want to forget the day I heard the song “Married Life” from the first scene of the Pixar movie Up, & how I actually teared up watching the first scene of the movie as I watched our new life play out through a cartoon-lense.

I won’t let you forget the time you called me after work to come see the bathroom you had just built in a building, and how I drove over there to be thoroughly impressed at how skilled my husband was. & how right after I pulled back in our driveway, I received a call from you telling me how you locked yourself in the bathroom and needed me to come let you out. Hahahahaha.

Let’s not forget the little joys, like the mornings when our alarms go off, and we savor a couple more minutes in bed together before starting our days,

Or the new game we invented where we sit on our front porch and rate the cars that drive by on a scale from 1-10. (My 10 is a vintage Ford Bronco, Elijah’s is a Ford Powerstroke.)

Or our new favorite spot for dinner, sitting in our Adirondack chairs in the backyard, also watching cars drive by. (There’s an old person theme rolling here.)

I don’t wanna forget all the times people come over…the granola porch party, the bridal shower, or the small late-night campfires with friends.

& to wrap these months up with a nice bow, one pair of our best friends got engaged, and the others are getting married in less than a month…which means we get to ride out this season of life with even more people. Like the excitement of setting up your first home & serving your first meal to friends…or the giddiness of picking a date & dreaming of all the wedding things. It’s a good life, yall.

As I wrap up writing this, I just picture Elijah & I reading this list years from now on the couch together (maybe with a few other little people), laughing & saying “I remember that!”

I know that our marriage will be far from perfect, but the groundwork we’re laying feels solid & I’m ready to tackle all that comes our way. I love you Elijah Montgomery.
