Our house is already full of stories…and we haven’t even lived there yet.
First thing I see every time I walk into the house is our new front door propped in the foyer (still waiting to be hung) & it never ceases to make me smile at what a gift it is. I see the hardwood floors that were the first “big” project Elijah & I had done on the house together & continue to beam with excitement about them. Then I walk into the living room & see the $15 piece of Oak furniture me & my mom found on one of our early morning yard-saleing Saturdays. I see the piece of furniture that will serve as our coffee table that my Bobby made for us, with a note inside that says, “I made this piece of furniture for Daisy Sue because I love her.” When I make my way into the kitchen, I see the estate sale finds that me & Elijah quickly decided on together while I FaceTimed him during his dove hunt early one morning. Then I peak into our bedroom and see the empty space that will hold the bed that Elijah is going to build for us.
Every piece already has a story.
This past Sunday, we added one of my new favorite stories to the list: The Story of Our Free Kitchen Table.
It was the most glorious day. The weather was sunny and mid-70s. I started the morning on a long run with Anna Belle, like we used to do when she was living at home.
Then, Elijah & I went to church together. On the ride home from church, it just so happened that as we were passing our house, we saw some of our friends in the car behind us, so we texted them to come get a house tour! We invited them in and had the best time. Before lunch with my family, Elijah and I stayed outside at the house to swing in the front yard for a bit.
Around that time, my Mom texted us a picture of a table outside one of the houses on our street with a “FREE” cardboard sign on it. We LOVED it. Conveniently, Elijah & I had just done a craft show the day before, so we had a trailer already parked at my house. We rushed back home & had my mom stand by the table to “claim it”, ha! I jumped out of the car with Elijah and checked it out. It was a little scuffed up, but nothing that free couldn’t beat. Plus, the legs of the table and backs of the chairs were just so beautiful. After some love and care, it’ll be good as new. Elijah ran down to my house and backed up the trailer and we began to load it up!
We thought that it would be a little too big to squeeze in the kitchen, so we thought we could use it in our side yard. (We have dreams of raised garden beds, string lights, and a dinner table in our side yard.)
Once we got to the house, our family met us over there and each sister grabbed a chair while Elijah & my Dad loaded the table into the house. It fit perfectly! I think it looks oversized for the space, but in the best of ways. We can comfortably squeeze in a crew of people around the table.
It feels like just yesterday that our little kitchen was empty, and we were all sitting in the floor eating our Chick-fil-a after working in the yard.
I’ll definitely share once we clean up the table & add new fabric to the chairs. I already can’t wait to work on it.
