How to Paint Porcelain Plates

Well, first blog post in over a year…hello again! I’m not sure if it’s the baby on the way or the weather warming up, but I’ve had an extra dose of creative energy lately! I thought I’d hop on here & share one of my favorite DIY gifts with you, hand-painted porcelain plates! Ever since Anna Bond posted her painted plate on Instagram, I’ve been having the best time creating these as gifts!

Blue and White Plate

A few years back, I gifted one to my mom with all of our family’s names on it. Last year, I gifted plates to a group of ladies at church who hosted a wedding shower for us. Each of their plates had their wedding anniversary on it. I also gifted a plate last year to a friend getting married with her soon-to-be wedding anniversary. The list of how you could use these as gifts could go on & on!

I didn’t take a beautiful picture of them all wrapped up, but thankfully I did snap a quick picture with my phone above! I love presenting them wrapped in a cellophane bag with a gingham bow tied on top.

How to Paint a plate
The beginnings of the plate!

Steps

  1. Start by cleaning & drying the plate! Make sure the surface is clean before beginning.
  2. Shake the pen! You will have to press the tip repeatedly to get the ink to the tip. I just blot the pen on the plate, and use my q-tip or paper towel to wipe up the marks I made.
  3. Begin drawing! I think the key to a beautiful blue and white plate is focusing on symmetry. If I draw a flower at the top, I repeat the same flower on the bottom. Of course you don’t have to do that if you don’t want to! As you make mistakes, dip your q-tip in rubbing alcohol or water to wipe off. The ink comes off so easily!
  4. Once you are done, allow the plate to air dry for 24 hours. Then, bake in the oven for 35 min at 300F.
  5. Gift to a friend (or to yourself) & enjoy!

TIP: Store your pen horizontally, so the ink doesn’t dry up!
